5 Common Home Security Mistakes

Small daily habits can leave your home exposed. The five most common mistakes are not locking your car, not locking your front door, leaving keys near an entrance point, leaving valuables near an entrance point, and having an alarm system you do not actually use.

Five common mistakes people make coming home

1. Not locking your car. It is critical that you always lock your car as soon as you get out of it. This is still important whether you park in your driveway, or a secure garage.
2. Not locking your front door. Ensure you have your front door set up in a way that is easy for you to lock from the inside, and make sure you close and lock your door as soon as you enter. This prevents an intruder coming in behind you.
3. Leaving your keys near an entrance point. If you keep your keys in a bowl, or on a hook near your front door, this is an unnecessary risk. This is particularly true if you have any windows around your door, where people can easily view where you place your keys each day. This makes them easy for an intruder to grab in very little time.
4. Leaving your valuables near an entrance point. Try to avoid leaving valuable items, such as laptops, near any entrance points of your home, such as by a door or window. Like keys, this provides the opportunity for someone to take this valuable item very rapidly.

Use the alarm system you already have

It is quite common for someone to have an alarm system installed in their house that they don’t actually use. If you do not know how to use your alarm system, don’t have one installed, or need your system reprogrammed please contact us and we will assist you. An alarm system that is not working, or not turned on, will not help you.
